I learned about Frederick Douglas, John Brown, and William Lloyd Garrison in school – as well as about Harriett Beecher Stowe – but many of the most influential, hardworking, and effective abolitionists are much less well known. This was true with the abolitionist movement of the nineteenth century here in the United States. Usually, they emerge from growing cast of men and women who set the stage, enabling them to step forth when the time is right. Historical movements have their leaders, but this book shows that such leaders don’t just appear out of nowhere. As I read, I became caught up in this often thrilling tale, rooting for the heroes and, even at this historical distance, angry with those who fought to maintain the rights of the slave owners. Many of the broad outlines are known, but the most dramatic parts seem to have been left out of popular accounts of the long battle to liberate slaves and bring an end to the institution of slavery. The most amazing part is that it is true and all these people actually went through the experiences described in this book. This is a fascinating and dramatic story with a cast of remarkable characters.
